Hanuman Chalisa, Chaupai 8

Meaning of “prabhu caritra sunibe ko rasiyā”

"prabhu caritra sunibe ko rasiyā" is Chaupai 8 of the Hanuman Chalisa, which Tulsidas wrote in Awadhi. It means: You love to hear the Lord's story. Rama, Lakshmana and Sita live in your heart. Read it slowly, one half at a time, and say the Awadhi aloud.

प्रभु चरित्र सुनिबे को रसिया ।राम लखन सीता मन बसिया ॥prabhu caritra sunibe ko rasiyārām lakhan sītā man basiyā

You love to hear the Lord's story. Rama, Lakshmana and Sita live in your heart.

Where this happens in the Ramayana

In the Valmiki Ramayana's last book, Hanuman asks Rama that his love stay fixed on him, and that he may live on earth as long as Rama's story is told.

यावद्रामकथा वीर चरिष्यति महीतले। तावच्छरीरे वत्स्यन्तु प्राणा मम न संशयः॥

Valmiki Ramayana, Uttara Kanda 7.40.8

Other readings

  • Some Gita Press printings spell लखन as लषन, the older spelling, read the same way.
  • Some read the line the other way round: you live in the hearts of Rama, Lakshmana and Sita.
