Hanuman Chalisa, Chaupai 39

Meaning of “jo yah paṛhai hanumān calīsā”

"jo yah paṛhai hanumān calīsā" is Chaupai 39 of the Hanuman Chalisa, which Tulsidas wrote in Awadhi. It means: Whoever reads this Hanuman Chalisa gains fulfilment. Shiva, lord of Gauri, is witness. Read it slowly, one half at a time, and say the Awadhi aloud.

जो यह पढ़ै हनुमान चलीसा ।होय सिद्धि साखी गौरीसा ॥jo yah paṛhai hanumān calīsāhoy siddhi sākhī gaurīsā

Whoever reads this Hanuman Chalisa gains fulfilment. Shiva, lord of Gauri, is witness.

Where this happens in the Ramayana

This line praises Hanuman or speaks to the reader. It does not retell one episode, so there is no single place in the Ramayana to point to.

Other readings

  • The Gita Press and Rambhadracharya both print चलीसा, which keeps the metre. Most families sing चालीसा.
