Vivekananda on fear and strength

The lines people reach for before something hard, each one traced to the lecture where he said it.

"This is the great fact: strength is life, weakness is death" is from Work and Its Secret (Complete Works vol 2). "Be not afraid of anything. You will do marvellous work" is from his Calcutta address (vol 3). The longer shared versions add lines from other works; the checks below show which.

26 lines. For the night before something you are afraid of. Updated 30 October 2026.

Be strong, my young friends; that is my advice to you.

You will be nearer to Heaven through football than through the study of the Gita.

You will understand the Gita better with your biceps, your muscles, a little stronger.

Dare to be free, dare to go as far as your thought leads, and dare to carry that out in your life.

Anything that makes you weak physically, intellectually, and spiritually, reject as poison; there is no life in it, it cannot be true.

Never think there is anything impossible for the soul. It is the greatest heresy to think so.

Never tell yourselves or others that you are weak.

Be not afraid of anything. You will do marvellous work. The moment you fear, you are nobody.

It is fearlessness that brings heaven even in a moment.

Have faith in yourselves, and stand up on that faith and be strong; that is what we need.

What we want is strength, so believe in yourselves.

All the strength and succour you want is within yourselves.

You must be strong; you have infinite strength within you.

Whatever you think, that you will be. If you think yourselves weak, weak you will be; if you think yourselves strong, strong you will be

The old religions said that he was an atheist who did not believe in God. The new religion says that he is the atheist who does not believe in himself.

Know that every thought and word that weakens you in this world is the only evil that exists.

As soon as you say, "I am bound," "I am weak," "I am helpless," woe unto you; you rivet one more chain upon yourself.

This world is the great gymnasium where we come to make ourselves strong.
