Ashtavakra Gita chapter 5: Four ways to rest
Chapter 5 of the Ashtavakra Gita, "Four ways to rest", has 4 verses. Ashtavakra speaks. Four short verses, each ending with the same instruction: let the sense of separation dissolve, and rest. Every verse is below in Sanskrit and in Wisdom's plain English.
All 4 verses
You are tied to nothing. You are pure. What would you give up? Let this bundle of body and mind dissolve, and so go to rest.
udeti bhavato viśvaṃ vāridheriva budbudaḥ |iti jñātvaikamātmānamevameva layaṃ vraja ||
The world rises from you like a bubble from the sea. Know the Self as one, and so go to rest.
pratyakṣamapyavastutvād viśvaṃ nāstyamale tvayi |rajjusarpa iva vyaktamevameva layaṃ vraja ||
Though seen, the world is unreal, and it does not exist in you, the spotless one: it is like the snake in the rope. Know this, and so go to rest.
samaduḥkhasukhaḥ pūrṇa āśānairāśyayoḥ samaḥ |samajīvitamṛtyuḥ sannevameva layaṃ vraja ||
The same in pain and pleasure, full, the same in hope and disappointment, the same in life and death: being so, go to rest.
Sources and method
Sanskrit from the common text of the Ashtavakra Gita, also called the Ashtavakra Samhita. Where our source had obvious typing errors we restored the standard reading and listed each change in our review notes. IAST is generated from the Devanagari. The English, the word meanings and the notes are Wisdom's own, written in the Advaita tradition of Shankara's school, the line followed by commentators such as Swami Nityaswarupananda and Swami Chinmayananda, with Lala Baij Nath's public-domain translation of 1907 as a reference.
