Bhagavad Gita on the death of a loved one

The Gita begins with grief. Arjuna sits down in his chariot unable to face the people he loves, and Krishna’s first teaching is about death: what ends, and what does not. These verses do not ask you to stop missing someone. They describe the self, the atman, that was never born and does not die.

6 verses from the Gita

  1. Krishna’s first words of teaching, spoken to a man overwhelmed by grief.

“The Blessed Lord said: You grieve for what should not be grieved for, yet speak words of wisdom. The wise do not grieve for the dead or the living.”

It brings relief by showing that clear seeing can hold loss without collapsing into sorrow.

  2. As the body moves through childhood, youth and age, the self moves on at death.

“Just as the embodied one passes through childhood, youth, and old age in this body, so too it passes into another body. The wise are not deluded by this.”

There is relief in seeing change as natural, not tragic.

  3. The atman is never born and never dies. It is not killed when the body is.

“It is never born and never dies. It did not come into being, and it will not cease. Unborn, eternal, everlasting, ancient, it is not destroyed when the body is destroyed.”

Fear softens when you stop treating your deepest identity as fragile.

  4. Like setting aside worn clothes for new ones: the Gita’s best-known image of death.

“As a person discards worn-out clothes and puts on new ones, the embodied being discards worn-out bodies and enters new ones.”

A fear of bodily loss softens when you see change as a transition, not an ending.

  5. Death is certain for the born. Grief for what cannot be avoided is met with understanding.

“For what is born, death is certain; for what dies, birth is certain. What cannot be avoided should not be grieved over.”

Some things are not yours to control, and peace begins where resistance ends.

  6. Beings are unseen before birth and after death, and seen only in between.

“All beings are unmanifest before birth and unmanifest after death; they are manifest only in between. Why grieve over that?”

Sorrow loosens when you stop treating a passing form as permanent.
